Prepper Group Listing – Hampton Roads Preppers

Greetings to members of Eastern North Carolina Preppers. Awhile back I noticed a post by Orion on American Preppers Network asking whether there were prepper groups in coastal North Carolina that individuals could align themselves with. At the time, I was a new member of a group just over the North Carolina/Virginia border, Hampton Roads Preppers and didn’t feel it appropriate for me to respond to his query.

Well to make a long story short, fast forward to now. I have become the default organizer of the group and recalled Orion’s post and got in contact. He was gracious and asked me to write a short piece discussing who we are and to invite interested individuals to check us out.

Hampton Roads Preppers has been primarily a South East Virginia group with most individuals coming from the Tidewater area primarily Chesapeake, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and so on. There are a few individuals such as myself who live in North Carolina, but are still in close proximity to Virginia.

The group has about 90 members on the “books”, but attendance averages around 15-20 who attend regularly.

As previously alluded, I sense from prior posts by Orion on APN.com, there may be individuals who may be geographically closer to our part of NC/VA who may benefit from associating with preppers closer to home, vice making the trip to either Raleigh or Wilmington. HR Preppers may provide a more convenient alternative to folks ranging from the Outer Banks to Ahoskie and maybe even as far as Rocky Mount in the West to folks as far south as Greenville to affiliate with a prepper group.

This group has been in existence for about 18 months and has a membership of approximately 90 folks. However, the sustaining core of members is around 15-20.

My goal for the group is to increase the numbers of individuals serious about prepping and committed to the group and making it more than just a lecture and demonstration venue.

My thought with this note, is to inform those living in coastal and northeast North Carolina of our existence and invite them to check us out at our “meetup.com” web page and to consider joining with us. Our next meeting is 16 November 2013 at the Northwest River Park, Chesapeake Virginia. Information on the meetup can be found at our webpage. You will have to register and ask to join the site.

Hampton Roads Preppers has 2 primary goals.

1. Provide a venue in support of a social network of
preppers that can teach/train/mentor each other on developing
“prepper” skills that will assist in feeding, sheltering, providing
medical care, radio communications and self-protection for themselves and those they love and care for. Foster a desire to assist other group members in the event of a natural disaster and facilitate required support in the event of a localized disaster.

2. Provide a venue where individuals can form groups under
the Hampton Roads Preppers umbrella that would band together for support/sustainment/protection in the event there is a calamitous societal collapse. It’s unrealistic for all members of the group to finance a single bug out location (retreat). This is likely a bridge too far.

There are those in the group who either have their own bug out locations. It’s likely that these retreats have insufficient manpower to secure and sustain themselves. These individuals would benefit in serving as a host for preppers with no place to go other than join the ranks of the refugees. Collectively the hosts and their partners could thrive at a host’s location during such an eventuality.

Let me share a little about my background. I am retired military. I served in the Army for 30 years mostly in combat arms organizations. I became interested in prepping during the Y2K scare back in 1999/2000. My prepper fears have been reinforced with deployments and time spent in a lot of 3rd world cesspools from Haiti to Iraq and Afghanistan and a lot of others in between. It was difficult to balance prepping with an Army career with relatively frequent moves et al, so a lot of my prepper goals were on hold. Fortunately, the world didn’t collapse and I hope it doesn’t, but now that I am retired I have a lot of time to think and to become even more concerned than ever over where the country and the world is headed. My wife is a retired police detective from the Hampton Roads area. She grew up on a farm in West Virginia. We have been living on our little 11 acre farm since 2010 and putting into practice our dreams of building a small homestead here in Northeast North Carolina.

Enough about me and my wife, so back to Hampton Roads Preppers. The group currently meets the 3rd weekend of each month. We have been meeting at a city park in Chesapeake, Virginia utilizing one of their activity buildings.

Our meetups have been mostly lecture style with a couple of field trips up to Richmond, Virginia to the LDS (Mormon) cannery to can dry foods and bulk food supplies.

My plan is to move the group towards a focus on preparedness planning, with secondary focus on education and training, and establishment of mutual assistance groups (MAG) based on member geographic clusters. The focus of the MAG’s is to assist members in the event of a localized disaster, but would also serve as the foundation for surviving a calamitous societal collapse.
